My niece is about to go into hospital today for a quick operation, she's in an awful lot of pain overnight, has asked me can she take some pain meds, I don't want to wrongly advise her and my own medical help won't be here until late morning, can anyone advise is it ok to take pain meds before going for anaesthetic, she's already had pre assessment done, would this interfere with everything on her notes I've just advised her alternate hot and cold compress on them until I find out from someone more knowledgeable. Thanks
My advice would be to wait until she gets to the hospital, where upon arrival she needs to ask the ward staff to contact the anaesthetist who will advise further as it all depends on where she is placed on the list.
I would leave it to the professionals.....unless the info she has about her op advises her to take her usual medication...and pain medication are her usual drugs. Alternatively she could ring the ward to ask....but they will be very busy at this time
Thanks for both of your answers, I've advised her just now while waiting to see was anyone looking in, to ring her ward, tell them the pain she's in and see can she do anything, they are familiar with her, she's losing her baby and I'm afraid I was not best person to turn to, so as I type this off, she's onto the ward to seek advice, she's hoping to be in for 10.30, by time she goes down then depends on availability of theatre, thank you for your very helpful answers
I'm no expert but have come across this scenario many times during almost 25 years of working in an Op Theatre, so I do sympathise.
Right, off to work!
with my recent op I was advised to take my normal medication which included painkillers no later than 6am as my op was anytime from 12 noon onwards.
Maybe little late to be of any help xx
Thanks Islay and Tilly, my niece is not normally on meds, it's just the contractions are causing her such pain, if I'd suggested that she took pain meds, her hubby would have needed to go to store for paracetamol, she never keeps meds at home, only calpol things for her two girls
She's been onto ward since, they've asked her to come in early for obs
I don't know which pain she'd like to rid of more, the pain of losing or the immediate pain right now :(
It is, she was just over 10 weeks, I'd shared the link with her that NoM had put up, she was so happy - she will be again, not a time to say it to her now though, I'm very sad for her, her Mam's on her way into her, little gran niece's off to other Nanny, she'l be home tonight, wants her girls home no matter what when she gets in :)
Thanks albs, thanks everyone xx in time - I'll probably show her the support here - because she did ask me to get an answer for her, I appreciate the kind words on her behalf
I know Albs, I'm (not that it's about me) am feeling a lot better than I was earlier - her 2 little 'uns will have help her with their antics, today is last day in school for one of them for the summer - the other one just thinks that's the building to dump big sis so she can spend all day with mammy ;) (6 and 2yr old)
