Can you tell me exactly why we have to take folic acid when trying to conceive?

Body reserves of folate are much less (a few months) than B12 or iron (4-7 years). Thus it is much easier to become folate-deficient during periods of intense cell division and the diet should be supplemented.

Large doses of folate can mask B12 deficiency. Levels of all three will be monitored throughout pregnancy.
