//There was also a lot of racism in Rising Damp and, again, it was done so as to make Rigsby completely ignorant. // All those shows portrayed the racist as a fool - that was the whole point of them. I think they did quite a lot to encourage racial tolerance.

bad link and no description. I am certainly not going to click on a link with no idea of where it will take me or what I will see.
Only because it wasn't funny!

Racism-wise - it was of its time.

1969? It's no wonder I've never seen it before...

The problem with Johnny Speight and Alf Garnett was the same as Barry Humphries and Les Patterson. Both were supposed to horrible examples but both times the creators underestimated the taste of the public.
I don't recall this programme, but it reminded me of watching "Love Thy Neighbour" about the white and black couples living next door to each other. Then it was acceptable, and folk were amused, but wow, how times have changed. "Mind Your Language" was another show of it's time.
There was also a lot of racism in Rising Damp and, again, it was done so as to make Rigsby completely ignorant.
Dont remember this but do Alf Garnett and Love Thy Neighbour, which wont be shown in todays climate, but was considered suitable viewing in the acceptable 70's.
Rudolph Walker was great in that series and of course he is in Eastenders nowadays.
I have the whole series collection of Mind Your Language on DVD, whirlyhurly......pure class :-)
