Is it true that this song's hidden story is about tripping on drugs? or is there another story involved? Or is there no story to tell? (other than Mjr Tom's journey)

"We know Major Tom's a junkie, strung out in heaven's high, but hitting an all-time low." - from Ashes to Ashes. As with all good lyrics 'Oddity' is multifaceted. The lyrics equally tell a story of loss and abandonment - scifi - or fanciful documentary of the moon landing which happened later that year. 1969
The story of Major Tom bears an uncanny resemblance to a short and rather amateurish TV drama concerning an space flyer whose craft slips out of its planned trajectory and cannot be retrieved. The play was totally set in the capsule, although it was a sort of roomy cupboard with a bar stool, and the astronaut was the only actor in vision. It was transmitted bout six months before the record came out.

I think the point was to show the stages of denial, rage, and resignation to an inevitable fate.
