The main plank of the mens' defence was that they were hired hands, and not the main ringleaders of the scam - which is presumably where the rest of the money went.
No doubt the 'brains' behind the operation will have two more numpties and another leaky boat as I type ...

These "chaps" should not consider themselves martyrs.. Their actions had nothing to do with the future welfare of their passengers. They are simply criminals out to make a fast buck to the detriment of their fellow countrymen (who will have to foot the bill to succour yet more illegal immigrants who will never be returned whence they came).
It is interesting that Sandy waxes lyrical about “freedoms” and Englishmen’s tendency to nurture that fine privilege in people less fortunate than themselves. Albanian citizens with biometric passports already enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen countries (those with non-bio passports need a visa). This means, effectively, they already have access to most of mainland Europe. It is only the UK’s refusal to join Schengen that has kept them from the UK in large numbers. This illustrates quite clearly that for some inexplicable reason (!) the UK is the destination of choice for many people. Despite having visa free access to almost the entire continent, Albanians still think it worthwhile to pay £6k a pop to travel across the Channel in rubber boats. I wonder why that should be? So it is not simply leaving Albania and “freedom” they crave. Like all illegal migrants massing in France they already have it. it is a life in the UK that is denied to them but which is their goal.
There is no earthly reason why Albanians should be allowed to remain in the UK having entered illegally. Albania is an official candidate nation for EU membership and there is no indication that the population is under threat or that their human rights are in jeopardy. They should be returned there forthwith.

/// The 55-year-old Briton, who was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant, was also detained on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration while the 17 Albanian men were held on suspicion of entering the UK illegally. ///
/// They have been detained while the Home Office considers their cases. ///
What case is there for them to consider, they are illegals and not refugees escaping from a war torn country.

Lol I don't know Khandro, it is entirely possible. Norman Wisdom films used to be aired wall to wall 24/7 because the thought that he truly was the down trodden victim of an elitist regime, who always triumphed with humour and guile. Officially a working class hero according to the old communist regime. On the Buses must have been touted as a documentary out there.
“I must have a strange way of thinking. When I first read reports about these two the first thought that came to mind was the Freedom Trains/Underground Railways that helped slaves in the USA move north to freedom. I'd guess the operators of that would have been vilified and maybe imprisoned, too.”
Yes you do have a strange way of thinking, Sandy. Very strange, in fact.
To somehow compare those living in Albania with those enslaved in the USA does not demonstrate strange thinking. I t demonstrates no thinking at all. As I have explained, those in Albania are free to move to most of Europe. All they need is a passport and they can gain a foothold in any Schengen nation (next door Greece may be a good start). Then they can travel to any of the other 25 Schengen countries without even having to wave a passport. This scarcely fits the bill of enslavement. Furthermore, anybody who has £6k to spare for a twenty-five mile sea crossing could not have been enslaved too much in the recent past.
No, Albanians want to come to the UK because elsewhere in the EU does not suit them for various reasons. The UK should resist this and return them either to France or Albania, whichever is easiest and cheapest. And quite honestly, Sandy, you need to reconsider your thought processes.
