Can someone please give me the closest translation in latin for the phrase: "Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." Thanks
My dictionaries are packed away somewhere (we've moved) but I'll have a go:
Homo oceanos novos non deprehendere potet nisi fortitudinem audet conspectu ammiteret.
Zandy if you can wiat for a couple of days to have your tattoo, I'll sort out my dictionaries etc. and get you a guaranteed accurate translation for Monday.
Just spotted a mistake in my earlier translation. I am fairly confident it should be: Homo oceanos novos non deprehendere potest nisi fortitudinem audet e conspectu ammitere.
Tamborine - you are right, expiscor is a better word than deprehendere but the rest of the words have to be in it right cases so "new oceans" has to be accusative plural
Zandy - I've managed to find my reference books. My final offering is:
Homo oceanos novos reperire non potest nisi litum audat e conspectu amittere.
Good luck and where are you going to put your tattoo?
