Newtown Pippin, also referred to as Yellow Newtown Pippin, Green Newtown Pippin, or more frequently Albemarle Pippin of Virginia was first noticed in 1759. The seed for this tree may have been brought to New York from England in about 1666. The original tree died in 1817 from excessive cutting for propagation. The Pippin was Queen Victoria's favorite variety and the only food commodity exempt from Crown import tax.
