At the moment i have my computer monitor on my desk which is against the wall very close to my window. I was just wondering if it is safe to have it there as the back does get quite hot on a sunny day. Reading that back, i now realise how silly it sounds...Thanks in advance
Difficult to say for certain – you need to compare the manufacturer’s specified maximum ambient temperature for the product with the maximum the room attains on a hot day; and then add an unknown for the additional direct sunlight heating effect.
As an example, if the product spec has a maximum ambient of 40˚C and your maximum room is temperature is 30˚C, then you have an allowable 10˚C for the direct sunlight heating effect (which would probably be OK).
The most likely effect of operating the monitor above its maximum permissible ambient temperature is that you will shorten its operating life. It is very unlikely to compromise the safety of the monitor to the point where it becomes a hazard in terms of electric shock or fire.
I'd provide some shade, even a piece of cardboard. Direct exposure to the sun can bring the temperature way above ambient. To show what your monitor's having to put up with, leave a thermometer facing the sun for 10 minutes, then have a look at what it's reading. You'll probably be shocked!
