My personal home computer has been destroyed by an electric power surge. Would the contents section of my household policy cover this or is this an act of God /
I doubt it would be considered an act of God, and in any case most of these ARE covered in insurance policies. However, many policies exclude individual items above a certain value unless they have been specifically itemised. You need to check your policy schedule.
The same thing happened to me. A power surge knocked my PC out. I only had to replace the power unit. Very cheap to do so. Hopefully this is all that has happened to yours.
As the Cowboy says, if its your power supply thats been damaged they are quite cheap to replace - mine blew up (flames etc. coming out of the back) and t cost me less than 25 all in to get it repaired.
As regards insurance, if you have "all risks" cover then it would probably be covered, but each company has its own exclusions, so worth checking the cover.
