When Does It Expire?

My debit card says on the front Expires End 11/21 but every time I've tried to use it online today it says it wasn't authorised and that I should contact my bank.
The bank have sent me a new card which is valid from 10/21, but I haven't registered it with chip and pin yet.
Any idea why I can't use my old card until the end of this month ? TIA

Bednobs, I'm with Santander too.
Did you not have to activate with chip and pin before you could use it as contactless or online?
