When trying to play a dvd it wont let me!

When I try to play a dvd, sopranos for example I can not play it due to it says copyright or codec. I dont understand and I don't understand when I have tried to download the codec it still wont play! Thanks in advance!

use vlc player.it is free and plays almost anything.
